“Why Academics Stink at Writing” Statement

I have carried a lot what I learned in English 110 into some of my other classes including Environmental Issues. In Environmental Issues we do a lot of writing, which consists of writing journal entries on what we do and learn from the class. In the journal entries we have to find sources and do an MLA Format for our works cited. Most of the journal entries are based on your own opinions.  I have carried many things that I learned in English 110 towards other course including Environmental Issues. I have carried organization, brainstorming, and finding sources and using them in my writing in this course.

Organization is important in writing and I learn in ENG 11o that organization of writing supports readers by making it easy for them to follow, while a poorly organized piece leads readers through a maze of confusion and confounded or unmet expectations. Organization, simply put, is the logical progression and completeness of ideas in a text. Another thing that I carried from my English class to other classes is brainstorming my writing. Before I do my journal entries in Environmental Issues I will brainstorm my ideas about the specific entry and look at the questions as well to get an idea of what I should write about. Finally, I leaned that finding sources to support your writing is important and using the right format for works cited is crucial in my writings. Throughout my journal entries I find my sources throughout my Environmental Issues textbook and on the internet. For example I will find sources online that relates to my journal entry and writing and use it. I will make sure that I used that right format for my sources such as my works cited. I learned in English 110 that using the right format for sources and works sited is crucial to make your writing as good as you want.

In Nancy Sommers piece, “Revision Strategies of Student Writers and Experienced Adult Writers”, she explains how the revision process works. ENG 110 has help better my academic writing in so many ways. I feel like I improved a lot in my writing over the semester. I learned how to be a successful writer by doing a revision process throughout my writings. I learned so much more about the revision process then I never learn before. “Students understand the revision process as a rewording activity”(Sommers). I agree with Sommers about the revision process and I do feel like it is a rewording activity. You can write academic essays and not “stink” if you understand and do the revision process at your own advantage. As long as you try your best and do a revision process in depth, you cannot “stink” at writing. I think once you learn the  more in depth and specific parts of the revision process like I did throughout this semester in ENG 110, then you can be an successful writer.
