Scientific Literacy Example

  1. The lab that I really did good on was the Daphnia Lab. I was able to communicate science-based information in this lab because I had to create my own hypothesis and write about my opinions. Also I had to explain what was the method used in the experiment and figure out the control as well. I had to provide observations of Daphnia and observe their reaction to the different chemicals used in the experiment. I was able to do a good job at providing an hypothesis and make observations by using scientific information. Therefore, this was my best work that I did for one of the labs I did.

2. Scientific Literacy is the knowledge and understanding of scientific concepts and processes required for personal decision making. Also Scientific Literacy means that a person can identify scientific issues. Examples from Biology that relates to scientific literacy are reading and finding scientific papers to use and writing about them. I had to understand many concepts involving taking information out of scientific papers and applying to my research paper, which I had to do in lab. Writing and finding about scientific papers has helped me understand scientific reasoning. I was able to do research on science and look at studies that scientists were able to conduct in their research. Also I learned that scientific writing is very unique when writing about your own or someone else’s research and studies. Learning how to write about scientific papers is important for college students because research from scientific papers help give ideas and opinions about the topic or problem to students. Also students are able to learn and use other sources to support their own position.
