My Learning Log

Learning Outcomes

1.) I am working to achieve this goal by doing more brainstorming and drafts  in order to work on my local and global revision. The changes in my paper was that I started with a totally different paper then I started when I finish. I started off with not an organizational paper because I didn’t have enough quotes to support my reasoning. I started to add more quotes because it would be more supportive through out my paper. The Global changes I made was that I changed the perspective of my paper. I developed a new writing strategy by adding more quotes through my paper and evidence to support it. I also decided to go back to my readings including Henig and Thomas King to find more evidence for my quotes to used in my paper. I planed to continue this goal my making sure I brainstorm and find evidence like quotes in my first draft, instead of waiting to add quotes in my final draft. Also I may continue to follow and revise my paper to make sure that there are no grammar mistakes. Finally, I would like to start with a good argument and back it up and support my argument.

  • Below is an example of my brainstorming that I did for one of my papers. I did an Architectural Draft.

2.) I want to make sure I understand the overall concept and meaning of summary, paraphrase, quotation, analysis, and synthesis of relevant sources. I’m working to achieve this goal by using quotations, paraphrases, and summaries more often in my paper. I learned that’s important to use these concepts because it provides support for claims or add credibility to your writing. It refers to work that leads up to the work you are now doing. Also it gives examples of several points of view on a subject. Therefore, I haven’t changed the way I view summary, paraphrase, quotation, analysis, and synthesis. The first writing prompt I did was alright but I feel like I didn’t provide enough quotations. I did my first draft and it had two quotes, so I had to add a couple more quotes to provide more evidence and support throughout my paper. I learned that summary is kind of a tricky because you have to write about the main ideas and you can’t use the same exact words to describe the summary. In order to achieve this goal about writing summaries  I think you need to not put in your opinion of the issue or topic discussed in the original piece because that will ruined the summary.

  • Assignment I did about summary, paraphrase, quotation, analysis, and synthesis. I highlighted each term in this assignment.

3.)  What I thought about reading an essay during the beginning of class was that I was little lost and confused. Personally I haven’t been in school the last two years and reading an essay was pretty confusing towards me. I am working to reading essays better by taking my time and reading out loud. There was a time that I wanted to add a quote and I needed to figure out where to put the quote. So I decided to put it where I had a lot of supporting detail. I pursue to continue to go through the process of putting where quotes need to go. Also my goal is to make sure I introduced my quotation and not just put a quote somewhere randomly in my paper. I do think I need to improve in this area. I could start introducing an argument and then support it with evidence, such as quotations.

  • These paragraphs I added quotes to used in my final draft. Below I have a link of my final draft for this paper, which I added quotes on the 4th page.

4.) I think peer review is very helpful and usable because you get opinions and suggestions from your peers. I have pushed myself to notice and comment on global changes in both of my paper and my peers paper. I pushed to make honest and helpful comments to my peers. Also I want to make sure I analyze the paper and check for grammar mistakes. I have develop a reading technique to read out loud because I think you can easily identify mistakes and make sure it sounds right. When I read those first drafts I look for there is an argument and evidence to support the argument. I need to improve on just peer reviewing overall because this was my first time doing peer review and I look forward to improving on my reading skills.

  • Peer Review Assignment above on how to do peer review.

5.) The references that I found and used while documenting my sources was a lot of specific ways in order to document sources.  It’s important to cite sources you used in your research for several reasons. To show your reader you’ve done proper research by listing sources you used to get your information. To be a responsible scholar by giving credit to other researchers and acknowledging their ideas. There are many other reasons that citing sources is significant. A source of a book usually has many authors like our English book, but you have a couple authors. Most of the English articles are anthology I think. I lack confidence in organizing my sources because there are so many ways how to cite sources and sometimes it’s confusing.

6.) I noticed in my work that sometimes I used a couple words a lot throughout my paper. I still need to improve on my writing skills. I think to improve my writing I need to write something in English more or less every day. In my experience, it’s best not to be too hard on yourself, but just write a few lines about what you did or about your opinion of something. I do feel motivated to learn better grammar, punctuation, or spelling habits because I am not very good with this stuff and there’s always room for improvement. I want to improve on writing papers because it’s always been my weakness and I think I will continue to get better as the semester goes along. My strategy to improve these goals is to read my English books and trying to do my best at using summary, paraphrase, quotation, analysis, and synthesis of relevant sources.

  • Some of my mistakes I mention is in here and there are comments on the margin from peer review.
